That afternoon…

Taylor walked into the trailer and dropped her backpack. She shuffled her feet, looking down.

“Why the glum face?” Natalie asked.

“Mrs. Fisher told us we have a test tomorrow. Ten whole pages of work. If I start studying now, I still won’t get everything into my head on time.” She sighed like the world was ending.

“Forget about the test for a minute. There’s something I have to tell you, kiddo.” Natalie smiled brightly.

Her sister’s face fell. “What’s wrong? Is it the baby?”

“No! There’s nothing wrong. The baby is fine.”

Taylor pushed out a breath. “I’m glad. Not just because I was looking forward to going to Switzerland, but because I want the baby to be okay. I want you to be okay, too. I read that pregnancy can be dangerous. You could die.” She looked at Nat with inquisitive eyes.

“I’m fine. We have good healthcare.” They were going to a dragon lair. Natalie forced herself to smile. “You have nothing to be concerned about. You hear me?”

Taylor nodded. “What is it, then?”

Nat patted the seat next to her. “Sit for a minute.” Taylor sat down, still looking worried. “How would you feel about leaving Brixton High sooner than planned? It looks like—”

Tay squealed, her eyes brightening up a whole lot. “Do you mean it? I thought we had to wait another few weeks.” She spoke fast, sounding animated. “How soon? When do we go? This is amazing.” She clapped her hands.

Natalie laughed softly. She couldn’t help it because Tay’s enthusiasm was catching. “Well,” she sighed, “I’m glad you’re so happy. We leave in a few days.” Just saying the words made her want to panic all over again.

“Days?” Tay squealed again. “This is so great. I’m so happy. I only have a few days left at Brixton High.” She jumped up, fist-pumping the air.

“Actually, I emailed them this morning to say that you wouldn’t be back. I need someone to—”

Taylor all-out screamed. It hurt Nat’s ears a little, but it was a good kind of hurt. It had been a long time since she’d seen Tay so excited about anything.

“Calm down, kiddo,” she laughed.

“I can’t! I’m so happy. I hated that place.” Tay sat back down and hugged Nat tightly. “Thank you, Sis!” she murmured. “Thank you for taking such good care of me. You are the best!”

She felt her eyes sting as she hugged Taylor back.

“Thank you for being the best sister. You make it easy for me. You never complain.” She pulled back so that she could look into Tay’s eyes. “I know you’ve had a rough time. It’s going to get easier from here on out.” She prayed that what she was saying was true.

It’s an adventure.

“I know it will.” Tay smiled.

“I just need to remind you that Typhoon – that’s the man with the green eyes – is my boss. He’s not even a friend. Not really. I mean, it’s important that you know there’s nothing between us, even though I’m carrying his baby.” After earlier, she felt the need to spell that out to Taylor.
